How To Download Verizon Ringback Tones

There are a lot of you out there who are thinking that maybe you should try out these things called ringback tones, but you’re not sure where to start. I’ve decided that it might be useful to post an article about how to download Verizon ringback tones. (Later I’ll post a how-to for call-tones and other wireless carriers, but for now, since Verizon is pretty popular I thought I would start with them).

There are a few ways to go about this. First, let’s buy a ringback tone straight from your phone. The first way you can do it is if you have what is known as a feature phone – smarter than a ‘dumb phone’, but not quite a smart phone. Anyway, if you have a feature phone, then you just need to go through a couple of steps. 1) Click on either ‘Get it now” or “Media Center”. 2) Now click “Music & Tones”. 3) Now click on “Get New Ringtones”. 4) Finally, click the “VZW Tones Deluxe” selection. Now you’ll be able to select and manage your ringback tones directly to your phone.

Ok, now let’s say that you have an actual smart phone. You should be able to find something called the “VZW Tones”, usually from the home screen, but if not you should be able to find it in one of the menus. Click into that application, and from there it will tell you how to download and buy your ringback tones. Occasionally you will stuck with a smart phone that doesn’t actually have the VZW Tones app built in. In that case, you’re in luck – see the next example.
For those of you that have a phone with mobile browser ability, getting ringback tones onto your phone is a pretty easy task. First, open up the browser. Go to https://s.vzw.com/home . From here you will be able to surf, sample and buy ring back tones. You can manage your settings and tones list using the “Manage” link from the home page of the Verizon online store.

Now, for those of you that don’t want to use your phone to get or manage your ringbacks. You will just need to have web access on some other computer. Open a browser and surf to the media store (this is the first result that shows up when you google ‘verizon ringback tones’). Click into the media store. Then you will do essentially the same as you did in the above sample – you will be able to listen to samples of the ringback tones, and buy them to have them downloaded right to your phone. As above, you will also be able to keep your settings and selection of tones organized and setup the way you want by using the “Manage” link which you will find up in the header of the media store website.

And last but not least, you can text to get your ringback tones. Start by texting “LIST” to (short code) 728. You’ll get back a list of the top 10 tones. You can also get a top 10 list from a particular type of music by using code words (ooh, I can’t find the list at the moment, but I’ll check on that and try to update). Once you get the top 10 list back, you text back the 3 digit code, and bam, you get the ringback tone. Now, in order to manage your tones, use any of the above methods to get to your ringback tone manager.

Well, as you've guessed by now, this is my ringback tones site, where I look for and write about all the cool ringbacks that I find. There's not a whole lot of news with this these days ... I guess what I, and every one else out there is waiting for these days is a way to upload and manage their own ringbacks.

Wouldn't that be cool! As it is, we are stuck with the monthly fee for each ringback tone we use. You would think that verizon wireless and all those other providers would give us a break by now, and realize that a whole lot more people would start using ringback tones on their phone or iphone or whatever, if they would just give us a subscription price, or a package or something like that. Like, how about a "10 ringbacks for $10" kind of deal? Or even better - "100 ringbacks for $20".

How long will it be before they let us have what the ringtone business has had for ages - the coveted free ringback tones. I will be the first to say that I won't be holding my breath. I think the only way that is going to happen is if one of the verizon wireless engineers slips up and programs a glitch in the system. Otherwise, I'm afraid that at least those of us using the verizon wireless ringback tones will be stuck with paying the fees. *sigh*.

But I REALLY HOPE that they do consider the ringback package deals!!! I think that idea is just genius! It's getting a bit boring just having 2 ringback tones to shuffle between. For me and my buds. All my friends are like, 'Dude, can't you update your ringback?". Well, great, it's either get a new ringback this month, or get my Tim Hortons. And everyone I know will tell you how quickly they will be getting an update on their ringback tones when they call me up.

Business Ringback Tones from Verizon Wireless

As of April 01, 2009, Verizon Wireless has announced a new services for businesses, allowing businesses to customize the ring that customers hear when calling a wireless business number. Ringback tones have long been known to the personal cellphone sector, and it seem they are making their way towards mainstream with this entry into business culture.

Called ‘Business Ringback Tones’, these replacements for the generic beeping generally heard when a customer calls someone, will provide businesses the ability to play specific information about a business’s services, products or current promotions. Professional recording and script writing services, including voiceover services will be available through Verizon Wireless.

This will become an inexpensive addition to business’s arsenal of advertising venues, allowing them to promote products and services, communicate company messages, or answer customers questions. Rob Miller, vp of marketing for Verizon Wireless states, “They can also help businesses create a polished professional image because the message is specific to the company. The tones can communicate everything from product benefits to promotions, providing customers with helpful information before their calls are even answered.”

Tones will be managed by coporate account administrators, with the ability to upload 30 second customized ringback tones on their employees cellphones. A rotating feature is also available, allowing the business to specify up to 5 active tones that callers will hear differently each time they call. A feature for uploading as many business ringback tones as needed will allow companies to manage many tones, or prepare for promotions or seasonal messages.

Individual control per employee phone number will also be possible, or according to groups of phone numbers, as well as the ability to text message employee phones to notify them of changes to their ringback tone profiles.

The price for Business Ringback Tones? The price point looks pretty similar to the personal ringback tone cost structure: $1.99 per month per line. This will include the management features just described, but currently packages are only available to businesses with 50 or more corporate lines, registered with the My Business online account management tool. Voice mail must be activated on the lines.

The professional creative services from I-Mobile Marketing will be available to customers for creating ringback tones, at a cost of $299 per tone – includes development, script, one script re-write, 2 audio recording options, and 2 audio revisions. Background music is included. Additional fees will be charged for further script re-writes and extra audio recording. Businesses can choose to upload their own tones for $50 per tone if recording services are not required.

What are Ringback Tones? Ringback Tones is the new cool thing you can do to personalize your cell phone. What used to be popular were just ringtones (well, they still are popular) ... these allowed you to choose a ring or song which played when someone was calling you. You could even choose an individual ring tone for each friend or family member when they phoned you. (or boss, or ex, or world political leader calling for advice).

What verizon ringback tones allow you to do is to choose a song which your callers will hear before you answer their call. And like ringtones, you can choose an individual ringback tone for each number in your address book.

So, get your music groove on, download some ringback tones, and project a unique personality to everyone who calls you ... maybe some 70's folk music for your parents, 60's rock music for the school principal, and bust out the U2 for that annoying world leader who just doesn't understand that although you have some poignant and insightful solutions to the current world catastrophes, you really just don't have time right now to save the world.

Free Ringback Tones?

Free ringback tones seems to be at the top of everyones wish list these days. Is there really a chance that we'll get free ringback tones from the cellphone manufacturers? Well, as much as I would LOVE to be able to say yes ... it seems that you will still need to visit your cellphone carrier in order to manage, and more importantly purchase ringback tones. Sorry, no free ringbacks.

What I keep hearing over and over, are questions like this:

Where can I download free ringback tones?

How can I add my own ringback tones to my phone?

Is there somewhere I can get free ringback tones?

etc. etc. *sigh*

Please mr big shot cellphone service companies, let us manage the media we put on our cellphones ... you already charge enough subscription fees, hidden charges, cost per ringback tones. Just let me put my own music on my phone. I mean, how am I supposed to put that cool clip of my girlfriend singing in the shower on my verizon wireless, except as a free ring back tone? Ah, that would be cool.

For those of you that don't know what a ringback tone is, here's the deal: A ring-back tone is the ringing sound that the calling party hears while they are waiting for you or your answering machine to pickup. Kind of like elevator music, but while the phone is ringing, rather than while you are on hold. The ringback tone (RBT) is useful so that the caller knows that a ringing signal is actually being sent . The new trend in wireless cellphones is to customize this ringback tone, so that instead of the normal 'ringing' or 'beeping' tone, you are able to play whatever sound clip you would like. Most popular is to customize your ringback tone to play pop songs ... similar to the way that ringtones have been customized with the latest pop and rap stars singles.

Oh this is interesting. Verizon ringback stuff just keeps getting better! Verizon has cut a deal with Wind-up Records, making the Wind-up Records Music Catalog available on V Cast. What does this mean? This means you can get music from today's most popular artists for your ringtones and ringback tones, and even the full-track downloads for your mp3 phone.

As of June 2007, Verizon has partnered with Wind-up Records, and independent label, and made their entire music catalog available for purchase and download. How do you get it? They've put the catalog on V CAST Music.

What artists are on VCAST ?

The deal between Verizon (ringback) and Wind-up Records makes songs available from super popular artists such as:

Offering downloadable music to the mobile space is not new for Verizon Wireless. The deal between them and V CAST music just increases the selection of verizon wireless ringback tones available to their cellphones users. In a quote from Verizon Wireless, Ed Ruth, associate director of marketing, said

"The addition of full-track over-the-air music downloads from Wind-up's independent artists once again demonstrates that Verizon Wireless is meeting the needs of our customers that have a diverse set of musical interests."

How to useV CAST Music

If you are a Verizon Wireless user, you can download songs over-the-air to your phone, the cost is $1.99 per song (of course plus airtime). This will get you two copies of every song, one for your phone and one for your PC. Another option is to choose songs to download to your PC for just 99 cents, and then you can transfer any existing compatible music collection (ie. what you just downloaded) from your PC to your V CAST Music-enabled cellphone or memory card. Transferring directly from your pc is free, so for a little extra management time, this is the cheaper way to go.

When it comes to your cellphone, the coolest thing you can add these days are "verizon ringback tones". But how do I get ringback tones on my verizon wireless phone? And where do I find them? Well, lets just start with some background; The first thing you need to know is that a ringback tone and ringtone are very different things ... well, they are similar, but still pretty different. One you hear when someone calls you and your phone starts to ring. That's your ringtone.

So just what are Ringback Tones? In simple terms, when you call someone you usually will hear a beep letting you know that you have been connected and the phone is ringing - this is the ringback tone.

Another way to explain it is that it is a status indication that the number dialed is available (ie in service and not busy). This requires that the proper connections through the relevant telephony network or networks between the caller and the callee's audio devices are either made, or are available to be made, and the phone call will be connected if the call is picked up - either by an answering service or a person.

If all goes well, then the call can either be answered by a person (as long as the called number is not busy, or if the number is busy, and the phone being called has a call waiting service which notifies the person occupying the line to hang up the call in process, or put it on hold, in order to answer the incoming call), or by an answering machine or a network-based voice processor. This is the default case if the line is busy and the user a) doesn't have a call waiting service, or b) did not answer the incoming call within the (programmable) number of rings.

The actual sound of a ringback tone will depend on your country and/or carrier. Again, to get technical, in North America (United States and Canada), which are within the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), the standard PSTN ringback tone is generated by summing a 440-Hz tone with a 480-Hz tone and applying these to the telephone line in a two-second on and four-second off rhythm.

The tone combination produces a warbling "ring ... ring ... ring" sound, caused by the 40-Hz beat, or interference due to the difference in frequency, between the two tones. The ringback tone may be generated by the switch serving either the called party or the calling party, but it is not generated by the called telephone instrument or PBX. The ringback tone generally starts and stops at the same rate as the ringing tone of the called telephone, but generally is out of phase, i.e., staggered in time.

Finally we get to the fun part about ringback tones - rather than the standard 'ring ring' tone we just talked about above, cellphone carriers have made it possible to personalize the ringback tone that your cellphone service will play when a caller is waiting for you or your machine to pickup. A huge selection of current (as well as classic) music and audio clips are available for selection on your cellphone to play as the ringback tone. Customizing your ringback tones in this manner is available through subscription services with your particular carrier, and is generally billed as an additional charge per tone selected.

You can customize the tone played depending on the caller - it is possible to select up to 100 or so active ringback tones at any given time, each programmed so that different callers hear different tones/songs/clips, or programmed so that different tones will play dependent on the time of day.

What’s with the Verizon ringback tones

So how long ago were these things introduced? It seems that ring tones were just all the rage - every hot new pop artist made a small fortune selling their latest top 20 chart hit as a cell phone ring tone. Ludicris ring tones, eminem ring tones, Usher ring tones … the only one that really started to grate on my nerves was the White Stripes ring tone. Something about the synthesized sound on the tiny little synthesized cellphone speakers.

When they were first introduced in 2004, Verizon offered over 2,200 songs from Warner Music Group, and Sony BMG Music, with 13 music genres, including RAP Hip Hop, 80’s, Country, Holiday, etc. The original options allowed customers to choose from standard Verizon ring back tones , or from individually choosen ringback tones which would play for different callers depending on different criteria such as the Caller ID, group list or even the time of day. Once registered, you can browse the categories and preview sound snippets of the Verizon wireless ringback tones. Another option available is to signup to an alert list to receive a text alert when your favorite artist releases a new song which has been converted into a ringback tone. To sign up for this service, you need to visit the ‘My Alerts’ section of the ringback tones website, and choose TXT notification. Remember that just about everything you customize on your cellphone will have a charge, so don’t forget that the text messages alerting you that a new ringback tone from your favorite artist is available will be charged a standard text message rate.

And how much do ringback tones cost?

The way that you pay for Verizon ring back tones is per ringback tone, for unlimited use (on your phone only ) for one year. When you download a ringback tone from the website, the charge for that song will be added to your cellphone bill. Typical rates are $1.99 per ringback tone.

Get Verizon ring back tones right from your cellphone

You can also find ringback tones and sign up directly from your cellphone (make sure your cellphone is capable of sending TXT messages). To signup for the service, do the following: Send the TXT message “RBT” to txt address “728”. You’ll get a message which you need to reply to in order to accept the service. Now you need to send the TXT message “List” to “728” and you will get a list of ringback tones with song ID codes as a txt message, which are available for you to buy. How do you get the ringtone then? Easy, just send the song ID code as another text message to the TXT address “728”. (Again, you will be charged the standard text messaging rates for all texts you are sending and receiving). Once you have texted the song id to “728”, from now on, everyone who calls you will hear the new Verizon ring back tone when the phone rings, before you pick up their call.

What about a different ringback tone for each caller

So that was easy, getting a new ringback tone on your cellphone, right from your cellphone. But what if you want to choose a different ringback tone for each person that calls you? For that you are going to have to go to the Verizon website, where you can manage your account, buy more ringback tones, and customize who gets to hear which ringback tone. Visit www.verizonwireless.com/getitnow/ringbacktones to setup and manage your account.

Note: this information was accurate as of the original release of Verizon wireless ringback tones in 2004. The original release of ringback tones was limited to Verizon wireless customers in Sacramento and Southern California markets, with a starting monthly fee set at $0.99 per month. Each Verizon ring back tone purchased was $1.99. This provided the customer unlimited use for one year. Both the monthly fee and cost for each ringback tone would appear on the customer's monthly bill.

At the time of the original introduction of Verizon Wireless ringback tones , Verizon unofficially announced that Ringback Tones would be available to the entire network by mid-2005.
